Prostate
Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among men with an estimated 192,280 new cases diagnosed in 2009. An estimated 27,360 men will die of prostate cancer in 2009, making it the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men. Prostate cancer has little or no early symptoms. While efficacy of testing remains unclear, PSA is the only currently available marker for prostate cancer and the recommendation for use of PSA for early screening remains controversial.
The McDevitt Lab-on-a-chip sensor group in collaboration with Dr. Ian Thompson, Genitourinary (GU) Oncology expert from the Department of Urology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, are currently working on strategies to utilize the Lab-on-a-chip based sensor for effective screening of prostate cancer.
